Things have gone from bad to worse for Pep Guardiola and Man City. Their terrible run of form continued with a 2-0 loss at Anfield to Liverpool on Sunday evening. It's now six losses from seven for City and they're eleven points behind Liverpool in the Premier League race.
While the season started with dreams of a five-in-a-row, Champions League qualification seems like a far more realistic challenge for City
Most damaging of all, perhaps, is that invincible aura that they once possessed has vanished, perhaps forever.
In the second half of the match, and after the fulltime whistle, Guardiola was serenaded by chants of 'You're getting sacked in the morning' by the Anfield faithful.
Guardiola has grown familiar with those chants over the past few weeks - they started after City were beaten 2-1 away to Brighton and they were loudest today.
He had his own reply, holding up six fingers to remind Liverpool fans of the number of league titles he's won since arriving in Manchester.
“I didn’t expect that at Anfield. They didn’t do it at 1-0, but at 2-0 – maybe they should have sung it in the past, not now.
“I didn’t expect it from the people from Liverpool, but it’s fine, it’s part of the game. I understand completely. We’ve had incredible battles together. They win, we won. I have respect for them.”
Guardiola spoke in more detail about the decision to hold up the six fingers to Liverpool fans.
In the Sky Sports studio, Roy Keane received a roasting from Micah Richards over his experiences hearing that chant.
RK: "Just think of all the managers up and down the country who hear that every week. So it's not...
MR: "What was it like?"
RK: "What when I was manager? Yea, yea, yea, most weeks. Pep looks ordinary at the moment. And that's great for the other managers. It gives them encouragement.
"Managers listen to that every week" 😅
