Wembley looks set to hold the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020, according to reports in Germany's Bild magazine. Euro 2020 is controversially being held in 13 countries across Europe. Ireland has applied to be one of the 13 hosts. If successful, it means the Aviva Stadium will play host to four games in total, three group games and one last 16 game. Quarter-finals require a minimum capacity of 60,000.
The reports suggest that the FA and the German football authorities are thrashing out a deal whereby Wembley will host the semi-finals and final on the proviso that England backs Germany's campaign to host the 2024 tournament outright. They have indicated that in return they will support England's bid in 2028.
Helmut Sandrock told Bild that
We've spoken with them about it, that they could hold off Euro 2024 and support our application. In turn we'd forego the Euro 2020 games and support England's bid for 2028. Giving up our application for the three final matches in 2020 is only on the table if we can be sure to get the tournament in 2024.
