The Daily Star have reported that should Louis Van Gaal be appointed United manager he will overlook Wayne Rooney for the captaincy in favour of his fellow Dutchman Robin Van Persie.

It was widely assumed that Rooney will be made United captain at the end of the season when Nemanja Vidic leaves for Inter Milan but it doesn't seem a long stretch that Van Gaal would favour RVP, given that he also made him captain of Holland last year. However, Rooney's new £300,000 a week contract was rumoured to include a clause that he would be handed the armband.

Should Van Persie be made captain then one would have to wonder how the rest of the dressing room, especially Rooney, would react. Although, given his nature, I doubt Van Gaal would be too bothered.

Meanwhile, there are reports again today that Ryan Giggs will be given a role at Man United no matter who the next manager is.
