Such have been the consistency of the reports, it has long been assumed that Jose Mourinho would succeed Louis Van Gaal as Manchester United manager. Van Gaal has looked a lame duck for some time as United flounder in such mind-numbing commonness, and Mourinho has long since been desperate for the United job.
Spanish football journalist Diego Torres reported that Mourinho wept when he was overlooked as Alex Ferguson's successor in 2013, and following Real Madrid's elimination of United in Ferguson's final European game, Mourinho turned the post-game interview into a job interview as he pleaded that the better side had gone out, owing to a harsh sending off of Nani. Mourinho's collapse at Chelsea and United's current state of chaos has meant that Mourinho has got a second shot at landing his dream job, and Miguel Delaney reported a few weeks ago that the Portuguese had penned a six-page 'love letter' to convince United he could change.
The change may now come in circumstances as Sky Sports are now reporting that Paris Saint-Germain have approached Mourinho with a view to him replacing Laurent Blanc as manager.
BREAKING: PSG approach Jose Mourinho to become their new manager this summer #SSNHQ
— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) April 19, 2016
While it is entirely possible that PSG would want Mourinho to take them to the next level in the Champions League, we are fairly suspicious of it. It may be simply a case of Jorge Mendes (Mourinho's hugely influential agent) leaking a few details to incite panic in the United boardroom. It is no exaggeration to say that United are one of the worst-run clubs in England, with the power-brokers at the club massively divided, which you can read more about here.
Ed Woodward has at times resembled a man out of his depth. For example, he refused to negotiate directly with Chelsea for Juan Mata for fear that Mourinho's former side would attempt to sign Wayne Rooney in response. Woodward and co. are portraying an organisation that cannot decided whether they are decisive or not, and as Louis Van Gaal's reign trundles miserably forth, we feel that this report has come as a timely reminder to United from Mourinho's people to get the deal done.
We will wait and see.
