Wayne Rooney could be set for a move across the Atlantic, with the Washington Post reporting the English striker is in serious talks with MLS side DC United about joining them this summer.

It has been a mixed year for Rooney and indeed for Everton. Under Ronald Koeman, he failed to strike up any meaningful partnership in a mismatch attacking unit and has now been played deeper by Koeman's replacement Sam Allardyce. The Everton fans have raged with 'Big Sam's' style of football for several months now and made their displeasure clear last weekend during the Blues 1-1 draw with Southhampton.

Rooney was visibly unhappy when taken off last month during the Merseyside derby and was reprimanded by his manager after the game. According to the Post, Rooney was approached by DC United last year but he opted for his boyhood club. The club are now said to be more confident of persuading Rooney to leave this summer. Rooney was reported to have signed a two-year deal with Everton and would, therefore, require a transfer fee should he leave.

Now 32, Rooney could still enjoy several seasons in the MLS should he opt for that option.
