Manchester United are seemingly in the process of trying to get a number of deals over the line before the transfer window in a week's time. The Harry Maguire transfer has lost momentum over the past few days, although a move for Paulo Dybala is now in the works.
That still leaves them short a midfielder. United have been linked with a number of central midfielders, but do not seem all that close to signing any of them. That is a bit of a blow considering it was an area of weakness for much of last season, something compounded by the departure of Ander Herrera.
They may now miss out on one of their primary targets for the role. Bruno Fernandes has been the name most strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, but he could now be heading to a Premier League rival.
Portuguese outlet RTP (h/t FourFourTwo) are reporting that Spurs are now the frontrunners for the Sporting player's signature.
Officials from the London club have headed to Lisbon in order to negotiate directly with Sporting President Frederico Varandas. It is believed Fernandes is available for €65million.
Spurs are also in need of some signings, having added only Tanguy Ndombele. It is unclear what they are willing to pay for Fernandes, but they will need a couple more recruits to try and close the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City.
Despite the signings of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, this window could quickly descend into disaster for Manchester United. That pair are still inexperienced at the highest level, and it could have been hoped to supplement the squad with a couple more high level signings.
Time is running out to do so.
