Just one year after his exit from Crystal Palace, it looks increasingly likely that Jake O'Brien will make a return to English football over the coming weeks.

The Cork man experienced a breakout season at Lyon, who he joined last summer for a fee of around €1million. He would star at the back for the French club, helping them move from the relegation places to European spots in Ligue 1 after coming into the side in October. He would also lead them to a French Cup final, where he would score in a 2-1 loss to PSG.

O'Brien's form has drawn the interest of quite few clubs in recent months, with Lyon said to be seeking a fee of around £25million in order to sanction his sale.

It now looks increasingly likely that he will be on his way out of the club.

Jake O'Brien has been courted by a number of Premier League clubs in recent times, with Everton, Wolves, and Nottingham Forest among those to enquire about his availability. His future had been up in the air during this period, although it now seems as though he will be on the move.

Foot Mercato are reporting that Lyon have resigned themselves to losing the Irishman this summer. In fact, it is suggested that the defender did not feature in the friendly against St Pauli last night to ensure that he did not pick up an injury and jeopardise a potential move.

Another club entered the race to sign Jake O'Brien in recent days, with Brentford now making a serious push to bring him to London. He would link up with international teammate Nathan Collins were he to join the club.

It remains to be seen which club ends up signing the centre back, although it looks very likely that he will move on over the coming days or weeks.

Considering the amount of interest he has generated, there is every chance that he will surpass the £23.5million Irish record transfer fee set by Nathan Collins last summer.
