Former Blackburn and Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell could be in line for a remarkable return to the Premier League as the 28-year old is at Bramall Lane attempting to earn a contract with Sheffield United.
The Englishman has been without a club since leaving Blackburn in the summer but has been training with Chris Wilder's side in a bid to return to playing.
Per the Telegraph, Rodwell was invited in having also had trials at Roma and Parma. He can play as a central midfielder or in defence.
Rodwell was once one of football's brightest prospects while at Everton but injuries curtailed his development and he left Manchester City to join Sunderland, who eventually terminated his contract.
Sheffield United have been one of the surprise's of the season so far. Wilder's outfit are currently eighth in the table and take on Aston Villa this weekend.
