15-year old winger Trent Kone-Doherty is set to leave Derry City this summer and join Premier League giants Liverpool, according to reports in the Irish media today.
Liverpool are the said to have pipped Celtic to Doherty and are the front-running favourites to sign the youngster, according to a report from Dan McDonnell in today's Indo. Doherty had spent time training at Celtic but it looks like the Premier League side have won his signature. Kone-Doherty will turn 16 later this summer and Derry City are set to get a six figure compensation fee for the winger.
He has played a part with Derry City's first team this season, he was involved in games during the pre-season and was on the bench for their match against St Pats last Friday.
Trent Kone-Doherty set to leave this summer
Unlike players in the Republic of Ireland who have to wait until they are 18 to move to the UK due to Brexit, Derry native Kone-Doherty will be able to make the jump across the Irish Sea this summer if chooses.
Born in Derry to a father of African heritage and a Derry mother, Trent Kone-Doherty has chosen to play with the Republic of Ireland at under-16 and under-17 level, even scoring against Northern Ireland in the Victory Shield last year.
Doherty will become another exciting young League of Ireland prospect in recent years who has made the leap to a big club, joining the likes of Kevin Zefi, James Abankwah and others who have made the jump from the League of Ireland. This kid could be one for the future so remember the name Trent Kone-Doherty.
