It's clear that Gareth Bale is not a part of Real Madrid's plans moving forward.

The Welshman has fallen out of favour under Zinedine Zidane, playing only 90 minutes over two appearances after the La Liga season resumed after the break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite this, his future is very much up in the air. Real Madrid would no doubt love to offload him, but doing so will be difficult when Bale is raking in a rumoured €650,000 per-week.

The whole situation is a mess. What's worse, the club reportedly turned down an opportunity to sell him for a huge fee last summer.

Speaking to talkSPORT, former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon claims that Real Madrid rejected a €100million bid for Bale from a Premier League club last summer.

I know in the last day of the transfer window last year there was an offer from the Premier League.

They offered €100m and Real Madrid turned down that offer because they thought Bale would be a player in their side.

I'm not allowed to say the name, though I do know the name of the club. I think at the end there was a disagreement as Madrid decided not to sell the player, because they thought he was a player who could be used and be in the starting lineup.

While the club is not named by Calderon, the two teams most strongly linked with a move for Bale 12 months ago were Manchester United and Spurs.

Turning down the bid was an obvious mistake in hindsight. The winger made only 16 appearances in the league, scoring two goals and registering two assists.

There will be no such bids received this off-season. It is most likely that Bale will leave on a free transfer, with Real Madrid paying a portion of his wages.
