The Euro 2004 champions and the team earmarked by Giovanni Trapattoni as the template which Ireland should seek to emulate are currently bottom of Group F.
Greece have been beaten home and away long-standing whipping boys, the Faroe Islands. Claudio Ranieri was sacked as manager following the home loss to the Faroes last November. But new manager Sergio Markarin doesn't look to have radically improved them.
They have amassed two points from six games.
Like the Republic of Ireland, the Faroe Islands now sit in fourth position in the table, an achievement with which they appear to more content than we are.
And according to Dale Johnson of ESPN, this opens up a remarkable scenario for the 2018 World Cup qualifying.
Beating Greece means Faroe Islands are in pot 4 for the World Cup draw, putting them on a par with Rep of Ireland, Turkey and Norway.
