Though he was one of the few Manchester United players to perform well during their disastrous Champions League group stage campaign, Rasmus Hojlund has failed to hit the ground running in the Premier League thus far.

Signed for €75 million from Atalanta over the summer, the Danish striker is yet to score a single Premier League goal in 12 appearances, despite racking up five across the Champions League group stage.

It's fair to say that Hojlund has arrived into a dysfunctional setup, with almost none of United's attacking stars performing well this season, but the price tag for which he was signed has understandably put huge expectations on his shoulders.

United approach their (presumably PTSD-ridden) return to Anfield this weekend in dire straits, after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth - and Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes the acquisition of Hojlund epitomises the problems at Manchester United.

Graeme Souness thinks Eriksen comments speak volumes about Rasmus Hojlund

Writing in the Daily Mail, former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness slammed Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag's transfer dealings, and said that the signing of Rasmus Hojlund summed up the failings of their work in the transfer market.

He suggested that even Hojlund's Denmark and United teammate Christian Eriksen did not seem to rate the young striker highly, and said that the amount of money spent on seemingly mediocre players was an indictment of Ten Hag and Manchester United:

This brings me onto Rasmus Hojlund. He cost £72million in the summer and still hasn’t scored in the league.

I go back to when his fellow Dane, Christian Eriksen, was asked about him and all he said was that he’s quick and very aggressive.

I thought that was a tell-tale sign, because someone who knows him should have been kinder and far more complimentary.

I have written a lot about Erik ten Hag and, having been a manager, I would never call for another to lose their job. But everyone at that club has to look over their shoulder with a new co-owner coming in. It needs a total revamp.

The football decisions have left them £1billion worse off and with this group of players, who simply aren’t good enough for where the club should be.

Though it is undeniable that much of Manchester United's transfer movement has been shambolic for over a decade, it perhaps seems harsh to pin their struggles so pointedly at a 20-year-old striker who has been sprung into the limelight thanks to the failings of the club's other attacking talent.

Last season saw Manchester United fall to a demoralising 7-0 defeat at Anfield and, the way the club are playing, another painful result could well be around the corner when they face Liverpool this weekend.
