Manchester United today unveiled their first transfer signing of the summer in PSV Eindhoven and Holland winger Memphis Depay, and the news was met with a wave of positivity by fans of the club.
Fans of Liverpool and PSG were left frustrated, as it has since emerged that both clubs were in the running to secure a deal for Depay, who has scored 27 goals in 38 appearances this season.
PSV Eindhoven director Marcel Brands has since revealed that the deal for his player that Manchester United arranged came as a bit of a surprise to him, because he believed that the young winger was destined to end up somewhere else:
Paris Saint Germain were very interested during the winter, we had met with PSG, and if you asked me two days ago where I thought Memphis would go to, I would have told you PSG.
It seems that Manchester United formally registered their interest and agreed a deal within 48 hours, despite talks with Liverpool and PSG taking place in the weeks prior. Louis Van Gaal had publicly stated before that a signing could happen within 24 hours, and he will certainly be delighted that Ed Woodward was able to ensure that United didn't miss out on Depay.
