There was noise yesterday about the possibility of scrapping the Europa League and expanding the Champions League from 32 teams to 64 teams. That could mean up to 7 Champions League places for English teams. It would also mean increasing the chances of a League of Ireland team making it to the Champions League group stages.

It would mean diluting the overall quality of the Champions League and many would argue that there are too many teams involved already with numerous dead rubber games at the end of the group stages. At the moment this is just speculation and it would not be implemented until 2015 at the earliest.
