Germany and England's friendly on Wednesday evening was one of the most unremarkable games of football in recent memory. But a contest that was in general been dire beyond belief was lit up by a goal from Lukas Podolski on his 130th and final international appearance, wearing the captain's armband in front of his home crowd at Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park.
Podolski has always played his best football for his country so in a way it was fitting that he should end his international career with a cracker from 30 yards that eventually proved to be the winner as Germany won 1-0.
