Player fouled by referee and then sent off for his sins: Danilo of Porto was on the wrong end of a ludicrously bizarre decision in the Portuguese League Cup yesterday.
Referees have been getting a tough time of it these past few days, largely off the back of Mike Dean's performance during the West Ham v Man United Premier League game at the London Stadium.
Sometimes refs don't help themselves with the decisions they make. Dean's sending off of Sofiane Feghouli early in the game on Monday is a perfect example. But at least that was for an actual tackle. There have been some seriously weird sendings-off in football history: Edin Dzeko recently got a second yellow card for 'jocking' an opponent, while a Swedish footballer was once given his marching orders for breaking wind.
And a sending-off during Porto's game with Moreirense in the Portuguese League Cup is right up there.
It was the 78th minute of the match and Porto were chasing an equaliser when Danilo, their Portuguese defensive midfielder who had already been shown a yellow card, slowed down his backwards jog towards his own goal to yell something in the direction of (presumably) an opponent. Referee Luís Godinho bumped into Danilo on his own way back and, enraged, immediately blew his whistle and showed Danilo a second booking.

Porto went on to lose the game 1-0 and Danilo took to Instagram to outline his frustrations with the decision, saying how he had watched the footage "more than a hundred times" and could still "not understand how (the ref) made the decision".
Absolute madness.
