Oldham and Rochdale drew 0-0 on Tuesday night in what was a crucial relegation battle game for both teams.
The most notable incident of the match came in the first half when a fan ran onto the pitch and made a beeline for referee Peter Bankes. The official had just awarded a penalty to Rochdale following a foul in the box by Oldham's Anthony Gerrard.
Taking an amusingly slow side step, Bankes managed to avoid the fan who slipped to the ground. Gerrard - a cousin of Steven Gerrard - then restrained the fan before he was escorted from the pitch.
Sky Sports report that the 27-year-old supporter was later charged with encroaching onto the pitch, possession of a class A dug and a section four public order offence.
Oldham manager Richie Wellens later said the fan had chosen the wrong man to tangle with.
"I saw the end of it. I saw someone slip into Gerrard," Wellens told BBC.
"If he's a fan running on the pitch he's picking on the wrong lad in Gerrard because I've seen him box.
"For any fan to come onto the pitch is not right. There are loads of fans here who were brilliant and behaved."
Following the disruption, Joe Rafferty had his penalty saved by Oldham keeper Johny Placide.
