With Jurgen Klopp's side confirming Champions League qualification on the final day of the season, many Liverpool fans would have hoped that the fact that the club would be mixing it with Europe's elite next season would be another reason for star man Philippe Coutinho to stay at the club.
It's clear that the Brazilian loves life at Anfield, but with Neymar constantly flirting and teasing him to join himself and Luis Suarez at Barcelona, it would be understandable if Coutinho was keeping one eye on the Nou Camp and dreaming about playing in one of the most attractive prospects that someone in his position could possibly find themselves in.
However, much to the relief of Liverpool fans everywhere, Coutinho has not only come out and played down speculation linking him with a move away, but shown that he really does care about the legacy he leaves at the club and understands how invested the supporters are, which means a lot to him.
Speaking to ESPN Brasil [via Independent.co.uk], Coutinho claimed that going to a Real Madrid or Barcelona would see him become "just another player", whereas he is aware that he could become a hero at Liverpool.
Stay here and they will end up building a statue in your honour.
Go somewhere else, to Barcelona, to Bayern Munich, to Real Madrid, and you will be just another player. Here you can be something more.
I have a long contract with Liverpool. Speculation is for journalists only.
We started the season very well, I started well. But then in the middle the performance regressed. Then we bounced back, I finished the season at a high level.
The whole team is playing well, today was a very important victory, next season it’s the Champions League.
That is music to any Liverpool fan's ears. About as sure as he can be that he will be playing his football at Liverpool next season, thus ending what was likely to be a summer of links and rumours to the biggest clubs in Spain.
It doesn't mean he will retire at Anfield, but it does mean that he will be going nowhere soon and that he understands he must stay and help the club if he wants to be considered one of the greats, which by the sounds of things he does.
As if he wasn't popular enough already, this will go down a treat with Liverpool fans everywhere.
