Manchester United fans would have been frustrated to see English pundit after English pundit defend Wayne Rooney's awful run of form in recent weeks, but they would certainly not have found themselves agreeing with Phil Thompson, out of all of them.
The ex-Liverpool man is not tremendously well liked amongst United fans, to put it mildly, but they would likely have agreed with what Thommo said on Sky Sports News just before Man Utd kicked off against Northampton.
Thompson believes not only does Wayne Rooney need to be dropped, but also that Michael Carrick has to play in place of Fellaini in order to get the team passing the ball forward. It was a refreshing break from what we usually see, and saw from Neil Mellor seconds before:
The fact that Carrick would go on to score the opening goal of the game made him look even better.
Spot on. Trying to accommodate Rooney and Pogba playing in the same areas with Fellaini behind them won't work. Carrick would allow Pogba to influence the game further up the pitch where he is more comfortable, and Rooney should be given a spell on the sidelines, if anything to prove that he is not immune to it.
Phil Thompson speaking sense on Manchester United when most others just like to remind us all how good Wayne Rooney has been.
Fair play to him.
