Liverpool have dropped points in the Champions League once again, and tonight's trip to Spartak Moscow played out in a similar manner to the opening draw with Sevilla at home.
Liverpool utterly dominated the game: they hogged all of the ball, and created virtually all of the chances. It was the usual, twice-weekly torture for Liverpool fans, and Sky Sports News decided to fight BT Sport's ratings by putting Phil Thompson through the ringer on live television on a Soccer Special.
Here is how Thommo reacted to Liverpool falling behind:
Liverpool did equalise through Phillippe Coutinho, but a late corner for Spartak in the first half gave Thompson the kind of palpitations that Liverpool fans know too well. The fact Liverpool then missed a simple counter-attack - Mo Salah inexplicably driving the ball across the face of the goal when it looked easier to score - made for some good TV.
Liverpool missed, and the second half brought a string of missed opportunities. And with eight additional minutes, Liverpool reserved some of their best chances for late in the game. First, Daniel Sturridge blazed over from six yards...
...until Liverpool did indeed get a better chance. Firmino's simple pull-back for Salah was measured poorly...
...and minutes later Salah was teed up perfectly by Trent Alexander-Arnold. This time, he could only blame himself:
Liverpool will still probably qualify: Maribor look like a gift-wrapped six points, and Liverpool will likely not be as generous to Spartak at Anfield. Not that it will be good for Thompson's heart, mind...
