Football fans have united in their disdain for PGMOL on Saturday evening, after the referees' body fronted up over a disallowed Luis Diaz goal for Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur.

PGMOL, which is short for Professional Game Match Officials Limited, is headed up by former Premier League referee Howard Webb and oversees the performances of match and VAR officials.

During an eventful game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which Spurs eventually won 2-1 thanks to a late Joel Matip own goal, Diaz had a goal disallowed that would have put the visitors 1-0 ahead.

The strike was ruled out for offside, and supposedly double-checked by VAR, but they decided not to overturn the on-pitch decision, leading to much criticism.

PGMOL statement

Soon ater the game, PGMOL owned up to the error, with a statement that seems to have enraged football fans even further.

"PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool," said the organisation.

"The goal by Luiz Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials.

"This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.

"PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error."

PGMOL error

Owning up to mistakes should generally be seen as a positive, but with crucial Premier League points and millions of pounds at stake, supporters shouldn't just have to accept when PGMOL admits that they're wrong.

The decision to issue a statement is part of a wider initiative in which Webb wants to be more transparent about decisions.

However, on this occasion at least, it has backfired spectacularly, with the statement being ridiculed online by fans of all teams.

It wasn't the only decision to be questioned during the game, with many giving out about Curtis Jones' red card, although it must be said that it's mostly Liverpool fans who weren't happy with that particular decision.
