Dejan Lovren raised some eyebrows - and giggles - following Croatia's World Cup semi-final win against England last week.
"I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense," declared Lovren. A curious statement from a much maligned player.
The thought occurred that perhaps he should have waited until after facing Mbappé and Griezmann in the decider before making such a statement
Speaking on Russia Today, Peter Schmeichel felt similarly.
"One of the big things through the past week has been the statement from Dejan Lovren, who’s come out and done this ‘Hey look at me I am a really good defender. You all criticized me, but in fact I am one of the best defenders in the world.' That's what he said after the game against England," said the former Manchester United goalkeeper.
"That's what he went out and said, which is a very bad idea. Let me be very clear, today he didn't show that. His partner in the centre of defence, Vida, didn't show that either. They were not very good today. They didn't give Croatia the kind of protection that you need to have in these games.
"Maybe Lovren got a little bit ahead of himself. In the last two months two of the biggest finals you can play he has played in and he has lost. So he's not had a great time. And one of the reasons France scored four goals today was the unrest in that Croatian defence."
