Galway United secured the League of Ireland First Division title on Friday night with a victory over Wexford at Eamonn Deacy Park. With 98 goals across the season, they broke the record for most goals by a team in a League of Ireland season.
After a 27 year period with out a trophy, it has certainly been worth the wait for the Tribesmen as they have produced some sparkling form this year. They secured the First Division at a canter with a 100% home win percentage and reached a Cup semifingal. The secret to Galway's success this year was described by their goal keeper Brendan Clarke. He stated simply," No dickheads, no excuses."
Peter Crouch on Galway/Galatasaray mix-up
As they look ahead to a return to the top flight, the opportunity to play European football is now on their list of goals for the upcoming season. They were recently at the heart of a dispute over European football between Peter Crouch and his wife, Abbey Clancy.
On their podcast the Therapy Crouch, the former Liverpool and England frontman often describes his wife's apathy towards football. A clip from the podcast displayed a story about Crouch watching the Champions League where Galway United found themselves the centre of the joke. This was after Clancy had mistaken Manchester United's home opener against Galatasary for Bayern Munich v Galway United. A fixture that European football is crying out for.
All publicity is good publicity. The Galway United socials have taken it well and their response was enjoyed by many League of Ireland fans on Twitter.
We're not quite in Europe again, but we just got one step closer 🏆🇱🇻
Our journey to the @ChampionsLeague starts with our first game in the Premier Division in early 2024, we'll see you there @petercrouch @OfficialClancy 🇪🇺👀#ItsATribalThing | @therapycrouch pic.twitter.com/qy75MLchhH— Gaillimh Aontaithe 🏆 (@GalwayUnitedFC) October 23, 2023
Clancy described herself as a Galway Girl with invites pouring in for her and Crouch to attend Galway's first League of Ireland game of the new season.
The men from out west may not quite be ready for a trip to Bayern Munich on a Tuesday night just yet, but who knows what could be down the line in the seasons to come.
