A spokesperson for the governing body of South American football said:

The latest information we have is that Barrios is returning to Lima, Peru, to explain his situation to the Peruvian Football Federation.

Barrios had been taking part in the South American U-20 championships. His father Angel Barrios admitted that his son was born in Ecuador but had dual nationality so was eligible to play for Peru. He also insisted that he is only 17.

President of Ecuadorian club Liga de Loja, Jaime Villavicenio said that Barrios had played for them in 2010. They believed he was 22 at the time.
