It was difficult to know what to make of Chelsea's applause of Steven Gerrard at Stamford Bridge. Some chose to see it as the inherent goodness of football. Others, including Gerrard one suspects, saw it as a bit of unnecessary pageantry.
We'd sway towards the latter but it happened and it was noteworthy. As part of his weekly column in the Independent, Paul Scholes has given his take on the applause and he has come up with an interesting scenario. If one of Gerrard's last games was at Old Trafford what would the Stretford End have done?
Scholes seems to think there would have been a divide.
As a season-ticket holder in the Stretford End, I would have applauded Steven off the pitch – albeit just the once. There would have been a few in the seats around me who would object. But just as many who would have done the same.
Sorry Paul, we're not so sure we agree with you on that one.
