One of the Premier League's greatest debates - Gerrard or Scholes? -  may have just been settled, by one of the protagonists. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on who was better - Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes.

While there's undoubtedly an argument to be made for each of them, the question of who was the best overall midfielder is almost impossible to answer due to them possessing different, world class traits over their decorated careers.

Paul Scholes' passing and dictating of play in the middle of the engine was instrumental to the Manchester United side under Alex Ferguson that dominated the Premier League for more than a decade.

Steven Gerrard was Liverpool's talisman for years. His leadership, goals, defensive work and big game moments helped carry mostly average Liverpool sides for years. One of the only things that weighs against Gerrard in the argument is his lack of Premier League medals.

Scholes has given his take on the debate, and his thoughts are quite interesting.

While many Manchester United fans around the globe will disagree, the man himself has come out and said that Steven Gerrard was the superior player.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand's Presents Five, Paul Scholes joined Harry Pinero to discuss all-time midfield greats.

Youtuber and presenter, Pinero, is an avid Manchester United fan, and when he asked Scholes who was better between himself and Steven Gerrard, Scholes' answer certainly caught him off guard.

I can answer that. Gerrard. Gerrard's a great player.

We're different, we're very different. He's an athlete.

I think he was more of a match winner as well weren't he. But he was playing in a team where he had to be. I was more part of a team, he was more individual I think.

When Scholes was asked whether Gerrard could do what he did at Man United and vice versa, he said:

Very different again. I wouldn't have been able to do what he did at Liverpool, whether he could have done what I did at United, I don't know. I don't see why not. But I couldn't have done what he did at Liverpool, no.

We're sure there still won't be a definite answer to this never ending debate, but it's safe to say that Gerrard and Liverpool fans certainly have more ammunition after Scholes' claims.
