An issue with Manchester United that is likely to be addressed either in January or the summer is the left full back position. While Luke Shaw has had somewhat of a resurgence in the role as of late, beyond him there aren't many candidates that would inspire confidence in the Old Trafford faithful, especially with Ashley Young in the autumn of his career.
A man who was expected to come in and compete for a starting berth was Juventus' Alex Sandro, though a move failed to materialise in the summer.
However, the 27-year-old was on international duty with Brazil during the break and hinted that a move to the Premier League may yet be on the horizon:
I’d like to play in the Premier League one day. However, I’m happy in Italy right now and I want to continue playing for Juventus.
Another player from Serie A which United are reportedly courting is Roma's 22-year-old midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini. According to a report in The Sun, Jose Mourinho is willing to activate the youngster's £27 million release in order to bring him to England.
The player's agent Giampiero Pocetta has come out and responded to the rumours linking his client with a move to England in an interview with Corriere dello Sport, stating that Pellegrini is not distracted by the chatter, and that they will both sit down with Roma sporting director Monchi to discuss the player's future, 'when the time is right':
If I have to talk about Lorenzo right now the only thing I can talk about is his extraordinary form.
He’s getting what he deserves on the pitch, and the rumours about the transfer market have never distracted him nor disturbed him. These issues don’t count for now - it’s normal that Pellegrini is liked.
Lorenzo is happy, though, he’s already chosen Roma once. Then, when it’s time, we’ll sit down with Monchi again.
The potential signing of Pellegrini could pave the way for Paul Pogba's return to Juventus, with Coriello Dello Sport writing that the Bianconeri could return for the World Cup winner as early as January and that the midfielder has already signalled his wish to return to his former club to his ex-team mates.
