Spurs fans were probably glad to see the back of Jose Mourinho.
The team have been playing putrid football over the last few months, with very little attacking intent in most games. They also struggled to keep the ball out of the net at the other end.
In all, it was probably best to move on before the classic Mourinho rot really set in.
In saying that, the timing was a bit odd. Spurs are set to play in the Carabao Cup final this weekend, seeking to win a first trophy since 2008. Mourinho has a good track record in finals and he would have fancied his chances of upsetting Manchester City.
Paul Merson was certainly shocked that he was sacked ahead of that fixture. Speaking on Sky Sports earlier today, he said that he would want Jose Mourinho ahead of any other manager heading into a cup final.
🗣"If Tottenham play like they did against Southampton, they might as well give City the trophy at half-time."

They're in a cup final on Sunday, they're up against it lets be honest because they're playing against a phenomenal football team.
If I haven't got a manager going into a cup final, if there's one man I want to get for this cup final to try and beat Manchester City it's Jose Mourinho.
I know they got beat at the Etihad, they beat them at home. If someone can set up a team to frustrate someone, I know we all say he is behind the times now and doesn't play entertaining football, there's no one better than him to set up a team not to get beat.
He would have made it hard for Manchester City. If Tottenham play like they did against Southampton in the first half, they might as well give them the trophy at halftime and stop wasting time.
How he's not getting stick Daniel Levy...
Spurs will certainly be underdogs in that game, although Ryan Mason would etch himself into the folklore of the club if he managed to pull off the victory.
