While they may have reached the final, it's fair to say that England did not meet their pre-tournament expectations at Euro 2024.
They entered the event on the back of a huge amount of hype, with many English supporters believing that they possessed by far the most talented squad in Germany. They did not play that once the football got underway, stuttering all the way to the final thanks to an incredibly kind draw and some major slices of luck along the way.
Spain deserved to win last night's decider, outplaying England in every facet of the game. They were certainly deserving champions at Euro 2024, having won all seven of their fixture at the tournament.
All of that has made some of the pre-tournament predictions from members of the English media look rather hilarious.

Paul Merson's Arrogant England Euro 2024 Prediction Looks Bad
Paul Merson has made some incredibly bad predictions in the past, but his take ahead of Euro 2024 might be the worst of the lot.
Speaking on Sky Sports a few months before the tournament, he said that he could not envisage a scenario where England did not lift the trophy in Germany.
England have failed to win Euro 2024.
Here's a reminder of just how confident Paul Merson was ahead of the tournament. #Euro2024 pic.twitter.com/QN4WhEZKVi— Balls.ie (@ballsdotie) July 14, 2024
How do we not win the Euros? Honestly, I'd be shocked if we didn't win it...
I just don't see how we don't win it, I'd be shocked. I don't want to put pressure on Gareth, but I think this would be a failure if we don't win it.
I really would, I don't see anyone who would live with us. France have got probably two players that would get in our team.
That went well.
England certainly have a very talented squad, but as is so often the case among the English media, Merson failed to consider the fact that some other countries also have very good players at their disposal.
You get the sense that not a lot of people outside of England will feel sorry for them on the back of their failings at Euro 2024.
