Paul Merson made a major blunder on Sky Sports News on Saturday afternoon, when he appeared to forget that Bayern Munich won the Champions League not two years ago.
Merson was discussing the recent rumours that Spurs hitman Harry Kane may be lured to the Allianz Arena for next season, especially if Spurs cannot claim a trophy.
The sweeping statement from the former Arsenal man on Bayern's recent fortunes seemed to suggest that he has forgotten that the club were champions of Europe as recently as 2020.
Paul Merson makes major Bayern Munich error on Sky
Speaking on Soccer Saturday, Paul Merson was asked to comment on rumours linking Harry Kane with a move to Bayern Munich.
🗣 "If Bayern Munich came calling, you'd have to be the ultimate Spurs man not to be tempted"
"What would you go there for? Tell me what would you go there for?..." 👀 pic.twitter.com/8zjCbQ5nE6— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) October 15, 2022
The German giants have won every domestic title for the past decade, and would present an intriguing shot at silverware for Kane who, despite his incredible goalscoring feats at Spurs, has yet to win a major trophy.
Merson made a major slip up in his answer:
I don't know if that will rock his boat, the Bayern Munich one. What would you go there for? Tell me, what would you go there for? I don't know. To win the Bundesliga?
They won't win the Champions League. They didn't win it with Lewandowski in it.
They are a great European team but they might get left behind with your Man City's and teams like that.
There's just one slight issue there - Bayern Munich did win the Champions League with Robert Lewandowski, only two years ago. What's more, Lewandowksi finished as top scorer in the competition, with 15 goals in just 11 matches.
The German side broke European records on their way to the 2019-20 Champions League crown, winning every single game (the first team ever to do so), and claiming their iconic 8-2 win over Barcelona along the way.

Hilariously, given the fact Paul Merson is arguing for Harry Kane to stay at Spurs rather than make the move to Bayern, that run also included a massive 7-2 win for Bayern against Spurs, in White Hart Lane.
It's an embarrassing blunder from Merson - though, in fairness to him, it seems as though that 2020 crown also slipped the mind of host Jeff Stelling.
The 2019-20 season was completed with a blitz-style tournament in Lisbon, with each quarter-final and semi-final taking place over just one leg in empty neutral venues, after the competition was delayed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nonetheless, Bayern's win in the tournament that season is one of the most dominant and ruthless in Champions League history. Whatever about fans forgetting - for a professional pundit like Paul Merson to have spoofed past a team winning the European Cup just two years ago is pretty damning.
