Very few people could get under the skin of Roy Keane when he was on a football pitch. The former Manchester United captain possessed the type of mentality that very few could match.
His temper certainly was an issue, with no shortage of examples during his playing days. Despite this, few could get in his head.
That isn't to say opposition players didn't try down through the years. Paul Gascoigne was one of those, with the former England star not afraid to employ some odd tactics on the pitch during his career.
Speaking on the trailer for his upcoming appearance on 'Anything Goes With James English', he said he did his best to put off a young Roy Keane during his early days at Nottingham Forest by telling him he had slept with his wife.
I remember Roy Keane once, I just used to talk to him all the time.
I remember going down the tunnel and I said: ‘Roy, you reckon you’re the new kid on the block? Welcome to your worst nightmare.’
We won one-nil but he said afterwards in the papers: ‘Thank god that game is over with, I’ve never been talked to so much in my life'.
I used to say: ‘I’m sleeping with your wife.’
Gascoigne was at Spurs at the time, and while Keane would soon move on to Manchester United, the midfielder would soon leave English football and take in spells in Italy and Scotland.
While he would return at the end of decade, we imagine the Roy Keane he encountered on those occasions was a far different one to the one he came against as United captain.
