Dundalk are not having the best of title defences this season, lagging a massive 15 points off League of Ireland leaders Cork City with 20 games played. One of their key players, however, has been putting in some tremendous performances this season and has caught the eye of both international managers on this island.
Patrick McEleney has scored seven league goals so far, with some absolutely sumptuous finishes amongst them. While that seems to be his speciality, the Derry-born attacker also possesses great pace, wonderful close control and superb technique.
Arguably the most talented player in the 12-team league, these qualities have not been missed by Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill or by his Northern Ireland contemporary Micheal O'Neill.
According to Lilywhites manager Stephen Kenny, quoted by the Irish Mirror, both coaches have scouted out the striker.
I know that [Patrick has] been watched by both at various times. Let’s see how he goes. He needs to show a level of consistency in his performances and anything is possible for him. He has been watched.
The former Derry City player is eligible to play for either side, and is open to approaches wherever they may come from.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to play at the highest level I can so it's definitely in my sights. I haven't spoken to anybody or heard anything. Whoever rings, we'll see but I haven't been in contact with anyone.
The 24-year-old had played for the Republic of Ireland U17 and U19 squads before switching allegiance to Northern Ireland at U21 level with a view to breaking into the senior team, but a call-up never materialised.
Whichever shade of green McEleney chooses to represent, let's hope we just get to see him produce moments of magic like this on the international stage.
