Predicting which poets show up maybe the bane of every Leaving Cert student's existence but it turns out that poets aren't too good at making projections themselves.
1966 was the year of the Wembley bother, and the state broadcaster decided to give Patrick Kavanagh the task of previewing the World Cup for the RTE Guide. The Monaghan born wordsmith proved to be a far from prescient pundit as he anticipated that our neighbours to the east had absolutely no hope of winning the tournament.
"I must say that I agree with most eyewitnesses that England haven't a chance."
He also suggested jokily that the Portuguese goal machine Eusebio was named in honour of a character in his novel Tarry Flynn, 'Eusebio Cassidy.'
