Damien Duff wants to come home and finish his career in the League of Ireland. That much is clear. It's also clear that he's not expecting a golden retirement complete with a bumper paycheque. However, any at all paycheque may even be stretching it if Pat Fenlon is to be believed.
Speaking to reporters in the aftermath of Rovers' 4-1 win over Derry on Monday, Fenlon made it clear that if Duff is going to sign for the Tallaght side, he'll have to do it for no monetary reward.
'If Damien plays for nothing that's brilliant', said the former Hibernian boss who went on to confirm that he had spoken to Duff about signing for Rovers but that unless he was willing to play for nothing, it would be difficult to make it happen.
I had a conversation over the phone with him and nothing's gone on since then. But that was weeks ago, months ago.
We don't have any money it's as simple as that.
With Rovers thought to be the most likely destination for the former Chelsea winger, it seems that if he is to get his wish of a home-based retirement, he better be willing to do it for the love of the game and nothing else.
