Which One Of Ye Predicted Everton Would Get Relegated?

Unbelievably, that's not even the worst prediction ye furnished us with.

We asked you back in August to stare into your tattered and perhaps faulty crystal balls and tell us what would happen in the 2013-14 Premier League season. What unfolded was the one of the most surprising League title races for many a year, as much of what we thought we knew in 2013 was turned on its head.

We hand out our awards to the best and worst predictions (scroll down to see some of them). Before that here's a rundown of some of the predictions you lot had in August that now look distinctly odd. But do remember, the past is another country.

Who Will Win The Premier League?

Back in August, Chelsea were the fashionable pick to win the League, and when your predictions were totted up, it became apparent that they had claimed an overall majority. The Mourinho factor may have been decisive.

Slightly more of you tipped City to win the League over United, with the side once derided as 'noisy neighbours' claiming 23% of the vote. Given that United were champions in 2012-13, most of you were far-sighted enough to predict a drop-off with the departure of Ferguson, however 20% of you reckoned it would still be business as usual at the top.

And that left one remaining vote. Yes, just one vote went to a team other than those three titans. And that went to Liverpool. Yes, a certain Mr. Norman Birney daringly predicted that Liverpool would jump from 7th to 1st this season. And how close he came! He also reckoned Moyes would be the first to get the sack (again wrong but in another sense perceptive enough...) and United would come 4th.

Would United make the Top 4?

An unfair one here. For all the uncertainty that surrounded Moyes from the earliest days, the possibility that Manchester United would fail to make the top 4 was not one considered by the majority of folk. But a few very astute people (or optimistic Liverpool fans) reckoned the sky would fall in on Old Trafford with the gum-chomping Glaswegian no longer in the dugout. And how right you were. All eight of you.

Brendan Rodgers first season ended with Liverpool making tentative progress after a dreadful calender year in 2012. However, they still finished up in a distinctly unimpressive 7th place. While only one person reckoned they'd win the League, it turns out most of you thought they were on an upward curve. Some however didn't.
How many of you thought Palace would go down?

Among those you tipped for relegation, Hull and Stoke were a popular choices, as were Paolo Di Canio's Sunderland. Cardiff had a fair few people (correctly) predicting their demise. Villa, Norwich, Fulham, Newcastle, and very wrongly, Southampton all got a smattering of votes for a drop. And one deluded individual by the name of Ken suggested Everton would go down (to be fair to the man, he also had City to win the League).

However, by far and away the most popular choice to go down, the team who an overwhelming majority of you regarded as a racing certainty to playing Championship football in 2014-15 were the doughty battlers at Crystal Palace, the team who finished proudly in 11th place.

Who will be the League's top goalscorer?

Luis Suarez missed the first 10 games of the season. Most of you reckoned that would kill stone dead his chances of topping the scoring charts. Logically enough, the majority thought that Robin Van Persie would continue in the same vein as last season. And one nutter thought Fernando Torres would be the top goalscorer.

The David May Memorial Trophy

Well, you've read down this far to see who's taking home the coveted prize, the David May Memorial Trophy. We toyed with the idea of making it a mythical trophy in the style of the Triple Crown (pre-2006) but ultimately decided that this would be a bit cheap. The engraver is just finishing up on the Cup as we speak. We give you the best and worst predictions of 2013-14...

The Best Predictions:

3. Very few people came close to getting all the predictions correct. A number of people proved themselves to be top tipsters. Some bloke called Aidan takes home bronze by virtue of having City to win the League and Fulham and Cardiff to go down (along with everyone's favourite Palace). Not bad. Not bad at all. He misses out on the higher spots for plonking Spurs in the final Champions League spot ahead of Arsenal, an inexplicable call.

2. Norman Birney may have been wrong on most of the main categories but for his prediction that Liverpool would win the League he deserves high marks. He had City to come in 2nd and Chelsea to finish 3rd. He reckoned United would rally to finish 4th after Moyes became the first manager to be sacked (again, I acknowledge not correct but an impressive guess nonetheless). He also had Cardiff to go down, a category in which very few had more than one correct pick.

1. Apart from his (at the time reasonable) assessment that Liverpool would finish up in 5th place, our champion tipster for the year is Mark Walsh who wins out for picking Manchester City as winners, but also for being one of only a handful of people to correctly pick out more than one relegated side (and the other had United to win the League). He had Cardiff City and, outstandingly, Norwich pegged to go down. He also fancied Arsenal would end up once again in the 4th Champion League spot. All in all, in a far from stellar year, Walsh emerges as the best tipster.

The Worst Predictions:

3. David Stephens reckoned, hardly shamefully that Chelsea would win the League. However, he also fancied that Brendan Rodgers would be the first for the chop. He ended up winning Manager of the Year. The three teams he tipped for the drop were Hull, Crystal Palace and Stoke. None of who when went down. He also a serious fancy for Robin Van Persie to take home the Golden Boot.

2. John Downes believed that Pellegrini would be sacked first and Fernando Torres would finish the season as top goalscorer. Insane.

1. Way out in front in the race for the worst predictor this season was Neil Goulding. He had Manchester United to win the League, in which he wasn't unique. He had Liverpool to come 6th. Again hardly shameful. He felt Paul Lambert would be the first to get the chop. A respectable guess. However, he takes home the trophy for his premonition that Wigan would go down
