One Of The Most Jingoistic (And Inaccurate) Commentaries Of All Time

"England's strength and spirit envied by every other football nation."

One of the more annoying commentaries you'll have ever heard as future Football Italia commentator Gary Bloom goes all Colonel Blimpish here and sounds like a wartime British Pathe commentator reporting on a game between England and the filthy Hun, sorry, the Germans.

This is truly abysmal commentating.

The free kick from which Poland scored was "controversial." The fact that it flew into the net "owed everything to the luckless (Gary) Mabbutt" The Poles were denied a stonewall penalty when goalkeeper Chris Woods clearly fouled Polish attacker Kosecki, Bloom reported that the referee "fortunately stood firm and waved away the protesting Poles" after "Kosecki tumbled in the box alongside Chris Woods."

Most annoyingly of all, he insists throughout the game that with the game at 1-0 to Poland, it was the Poles who were going through to Euro 92. That will come as news to people in this country who seemed to think that as Ireland led Poland in the table, it was they who would have finished in top spot had Linekar not scored late on.
