Olympiacos fans have built up a friendship with their Liverpool FC counterparts, mainly out of shared sufferings as a result of stadium tragedies. 96 Liverpool fans were lost as a consequence of the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989, while 20 Olympiacos supporters, and one AEK Athens fan perished in a stampede out of the Karaiskakis Stadium, following a derby match on February 8, 1981.

Pictures have apparently been doing the rounds on social media today showing the banners that Olympiacos fans plan to unfurl at Old Trafford later this evening during the Champions' League round of 16 second leg. No doubt to wind up their United counterparts as much as honour their links with Anfield, they displayed a "Justice for the 96" banner during the home leg, which they won 2-0.

The bond between the two clubs is well known, and prompted the President of the Greek outfit to send a letter to Reds skipper Steven Gerrard on the occasion of his testimonial game last August.
