The questionable use of a trophy in post-sporting success celebrations appears to be catching on. A club in Norway, Lillestrøm Sportsklubb, has been criticised for their actions after securing the Norwegian Cup on Sunday, with one of their players stripping on stage and strategically placing the trophy over his genitals.
Aleksander Melgalvis Andreassen was the player in question who bore all, with the Norwegian FA quick to commend his actions on TV2:
Winning the Cup is a big thing and obviously it should be celebrated. But it is very possible to do so in a manner that shows the cup a bit more respect. I am sure it wasn’t intentional from Melgalvis but it came out the wrong way regardless. I think Melgalvis and Lillestrom agree with that.
This sort of celebration appears to be common in Norway. Last year, RBK player Christan Gytkjær released a similar picture on social media:
This time round Melgalvis was fairly unapologetic about his actions, claiming it wasn't planned as part of the celebrations. When pressed by local newspaper Verdens Gang whether his grandmother was proud of his display, he responded
I don’t think she’s seen it. Fortunately she doesn’t have the internet or social media.
