Zidane was the outstanding player of his generation and he so often came up with the goods at crucial stages - in the Stade de France in 1998, in Hampden Park in 2002 and in Germany in the summer of 2006 to name but a few - and on a balmy night in Lisbon this day nine years ago he kept his calm to score twice against England in injury time to deliver victory for France in their opening game of Euro 2004.
