Name:

Michael Joseph McCarthy

Profile:

Guided Ireland to the 2002 World Cup last 16, getting results against  Portugal, the Netherlands and Germany along the way. But did a terrible job because he didn't get on with one player.

Reasons for:
  • Accustomed to working with Championship players.
  • (Slightly) easier to understand than Trap and far more entertaining.

Reasons against:
  • Not rated as a player, a manager or a person by Roy Keane.
  • His off-field activities.

Who would he get on with:

As a fellow victim of Roy Keane's ire (reportedly one of the players savaged in that MUTV interview), John O'Shea.

Who would he not get on with:

Anyone from Cork.

Will Conor Sammon have an international future?
Recommended

Has a habit of throwing the big man up front if plan A isn't working but it has paid off in the past.

Denis O'Brien needed star rating:

2/5

Definitely doesn't have any real star power but will require a little money  to buy out his contract at Ipswich. Should have much lower salary demands than Trapattoni.

Would he work with a CEO who loses his shoes?

Worked with him before for a short while but that was before he'd lost any shoes. Should be ok as long as Delaney doesn't jump out on him; Big Mick is easily spooked.

Overall Eamon Dunphy thumbs up of approval:

4/5

While Dunphy once described him as "a boil on the arse of humanity", the shift in his opinion of Roy Keane means he also looks at Mick McCarthy differently. After the 6-1 defeat to Germany last year, Dunphy stated he "wouldn’t mind Mick McCarthy coming back.”
