Roy Hodgson was presented in front of the media yesterday - though he really wasn't why he had to be there - as the English media were allowed quiz the 68-year-old about the death of English hopes, once again, at a major tournament.
Hodgson was flanked by Martin Glenn - the FA CEO - one of those who will choose his successor. Just yesterday, Glenn described himself as a non-expert in matters football. Yes, this is one of the men who will decide the future of English football. And they wonder why they keep failing.
Favourites with the bookmakers and apparently Glenn to take over in the short-term from Hodgson was a man already employed by the FA - Gareth Southgate. The former Aston Villa centre-back is currently boss of England's U21s.
The rumoured plan: Southgate takes over for a year until Arsene Wenger's contract at the Emirates comes to an end next summer. The FA would then appoint Wenger for the remainder of the 2018 World Cup qualification campaign and the World Cup itself.
Southgate is smarter than that though. He wants that poisoned chalice nowhere near him this early in his management career - that's according to James Burt of the Telegraph.
After Southgate in the betting is former England manager Glenn Hoddle. If enough time has passed since Hoddle was dismissed for his controversial opinions about disabled people is questionable. He's a decent manager, no doubt, but a strange individual.
What a mess.
