While he has gotten on the nerves of some people since joining Shelbourne, there is no doubt that Damien Duff is one of the biggest sources of entertainment in the League of Ireland at the moment.
His interviews rarely disappoint, not being afraid to give his honest opinion when it comes to things such as officiating and the opposition. As well as that, his antics on the sideline are something to behold.
Last night was a prime example of what he brings to the league. After Shelbourne produced a late comeback to beat St Pat's 2-1 last night, he was not afraid to let loose in front of the supporters.
Shelbourne were down a goal after 80 minutes to St Pat's tonight.
They won 2-1.
It would be an understatement to say Damien Duff enjoyed that result.pic.twitter.com/MlSXvOjwxe— Balls.ie (@ballsdotie) September 1, 2023
This result moved Shelbourne up to fifth in the league table, only four points off the European places.
Newcastle fans react to Damien Duff celebration video
It is clear to everyone that Damien Duff has a huge amount of passion for Shelbourne and their supporters, but fans of one of his former clubs are wondering why this didn't seem to be the case in the past.
His spell at Newcastle from 2006-2009 was not one of the most memorable periods of his career. After joining for £5million from Chelsea, it was expected that he would help the team make a push for European football.
However, the Irishman largely underwhelmed in what was a poor Newcastle side. His time at the club would ultimately end in relegation in the 2008/09 campaign, with Duff moving to Fulham soon after.
After seeing the footage of his celebrations from last night, some of their supporters pointed out what they felt was a clear difference from his spell on Tyneside.
If Damien Duff put in this much effort during the 2008/09 season we’d have stayed up! 😂#NUFC https://t.co/0zp8arkcVD

If he'd showed 1% of that passion when playing for us we would have stayed up. Must be one of the most disappointing transfers ever. https://t.co/ehhpdFO5wI

Don’t think he ever moved that fast playing for Newcastle https://t.co/lEqjq8QSi5

More passion in the first 5 seconds of that clip than in his whole spell at #NUFC. 🙄 https://t.co/SsYxgJBKAX

Newcastle were a very poorly run team during this period, meaning you certainly could not blame Damien Duff for their results on the pitch. Despite this, it seems some of their fans hold less than fond memories of his time at the club.
This is quite the contrast to the regard he is held in by Shelbourne fans, who are thrilled to have him leading their side at the moment.
