It's only been a year since he succeeded Louis Van Gaal but Guus Hiddink has already left his post as coach of the Netherlands. The former Chelsea manager was expected to easily guide his country through to Euro 2016, however, things haven't worked out that way.
Netherlands sit third in Group A behind Iceland and Czech Republic and it leaves one of Europe's heavyweights in serious danger of missing out on the finals in France next year. You'd still expect the Dutch to make it through one way or another but nonetheless Hiddink has chosen to step down with Danny Blind his replacement in the hotseat.
Speaking to KNVB website, Hiddink gave his thoughts on his less than ideal spell in charge.
I am sorry it went this way. I thought it was an honour to again coach the Dutch national team and I wish my successor, the staff and the players every success on the way to the European Championships in France.
Blind, father of Man United star Daley Blind, was earmarked to take over the reigns after Euro 2016 but now he has been thrust into the position early with the minimum expectation being that the Netherlands are one of 24 teams in France next summer.
