Mention the name 'Vidic' around any Liverpool fan and you can almost guarantee that Fernando Torres will be mentioned very shortly after.
While Manchester United's Serbian warrior was without a doubt one of the finest defenders in the world during his day, even the most biased of United fans would struggle to claim that Torres didn't give him a lot of headaches during his time at Liverpool, but surprisingly the man himself has overlooked the Spaniard while naming the three toughest opponents he's ever faced.
Nemanja Vidic was speaking to FourFourTwo who are serialising his interview which will be published in the September edition of the magazine, and having already learned how close he came to joining Liverpool, we now know who he reckons are the three toughest opponents he has faced.
Vidic was answering a question submitted by a reader who asked 'Who was tougher; Drogba or Torres?'
Drogba was tougher. Torres always created a chance to score, but Drogba was on you for the full game. People say: ‘You had a difficult game against Torres’, but it was just the one game. I went to head the ball but changed my mind and tried to pass to Edwin [van der Sar]. I misjudged the distance and Torres scored.
Drogba was physically the hardest; Suarez and Aguero were the best. Drogba would be even better if he didn’t get so many injuries. They were the top three I played against.
So there you have it. Most Liverpool fans would also argue that it was more than one game in which Torres gave Vidic the run-around, although we doubt many would say that to the man himself.
Interestingly he named another Liverpool striker in Suarez as the best he had played against, but the name Fernando Torres is not something that Vidic seems too fussed about.
