The Sun Journalist Hits Back Over 'Failings' After Louis Van Gaal Called Him Fat

Louis van Gaal has never been one to hold his tongue. Whatever you may say about the football his teams play, the man himself is anything but boring. Cocky, yes. Sycophantic, perhaps. But certainly not boring. His press conferences have become something of a call to action among Man United fans and the journalists that cover the club.

It's rare that he'll roll out the stock answers. There's always a headline in it and it just so happened that this week the headline concerned one of the journalists themselves. After the 3-3 draw against Newcastle on Wednesday, Van Gaal was fielding questions about Wayne Rooney and the Man United boss used the opportunity to let the assembled press know that he wasn't too enamoured with criticism of his captain.

When the questions went too far, Van Gaal cut the press conference short but not before calling out one journalist in particular over his conduct and more interestingly, his girth.

The journalist, Neil Custis of the Sun, was presumably unhappy at being so publicly fat shamed and he's taken the opportunity to respond to Van Gaal in the newspaper today.

You are right Louis I am fat.

I had a knee operation four months ago that stopped me running and going to the gym. That has resulted in me putting on nearly two stone. But I am trying to get it all off by having a dry January and calm February and a personal trainer.

At least I can hold my hand up to my own failings. Shame others can't.
