With much of the attention on Bastian Schweinsteiger's absurd plight this season, the consistent non-selection of Morgan Schneiderlin has gone somewhat under the radar. The Frenchman has struggled to impress since signing from Southampton, but given that his most impressive performance was against Arsenal last season, under strict instruction to smother Mesut Ozil, it was expected that he would prove useful to Jose Mourinho.
That has not transpired, however, and Schneiderlin is set for a move to Everton, per tonight's Telegraph. Remarkably, United look set to make back the £24 million they splurged on him eighteen months ago: evidently Ronald Koeman is confident of getting the best out of a man he coached at Southampton.
While Schneiderlin is seen as the long-term replacement for Gareth Barry, his signing may have a knock-on effect for James McCarthy. The Irish midfielder has found game time hard to come by this season - he's made just four league starts - but excelled against Arsenal last night in Barry's absence, having toiled in a No.10 position with Barry in the side against Watford the weekend before.
Should Schneiderlin slot into the side, with Idrissa Gueye and Enner Valencia highly impressive against Arsenal, it may be difficult for McCarthy to nail down a starting spot at Goodison.
Memphis Depay also interests Everton, with the deal mooted a short-term deal to cover the loss of Yannick Bolasie, who is ruled out until next season with a knee ligament injury.
Depay was not it United's squad for tonight's 2-1 win away to Crystal Palace.
