Kylian Mbappe's stunning season for AS Monaco, where he bagged 26 goals in all competitions as the club ended PSG's four year run as champions, saw him elevated to superstar status in record time.
Linked with €200m moves to Real Madrid and PSG, the craziest thing about those potential transfers is that they would probably be good value considering how destined he looks to be an unstoppable force as he continues to develop, or at least that's the general consensus from those on the outside looking in.
Monaco's goalkeeper Danijel Subašić, it seems, feels differently.
The Croatian was speaking to Sportske Novosti when he was asked for his opinion whether or not Mpabbe would be leaving for rivals PSG, when he lamented the fact that the club had sold so many of it's title winning team, before essentially claiming that the Frenchman isn't all he's cracked up to be.
I do not know. Really. There's another month for the market. Who knows what will happen. It is not pleasant when you are aware that you were a champion last year, have a top team, and so many players are sold. This is a difficult time.
Mbappe is a good player no doubt but he got into a team that played great and he's just a product of that. He kept scoring, gained confidence, but it wasn't about him, it was about the team. This Saturday he played [vs PSG in the French Super Cup] and what did he do? Nothing.
The idea that it would be better for Mbappe to stay at least another year to continue his development before moving on is certainly a valid one, but if that was what Subasic was trying to say, he made an arse of it.
To suggest that Mbappe is purely a product of the Monaco system is simply incorrect, as while it no doubt catered to his strengths, it's clear to see that he is a prodigious talent and he tore experienced defences apart on his own at times last season.
From Subasic's point of view, it's understandable that he's upset as the core of team that won the title has been dismantled, but it's probably best not to take that frustration out on a player of Mbappe's calibre, especially when he hasn't left the club yet.
UPDATE:
Subasic has since claimed that he did not say what was attributed to him by the Croatian outlet, as he replied to a tweet featuring the story in France.
Jamais je dit ça..Merceee

I didn't say that, thanks.
He also tweeted a picture of him and Mbappe to show that there are no ill feelings.
