The story caught fire in the online and print media today that the Algerian players have donated their bonuses to the people of Gaza.
Algerian attacker, Islam Slimani was reported to have claimed that the Algerians were donating the money because "they need it more than us".
The North Africans were the adopted team for a lot of neutrals at this World Cup after valiant performances saw them survive the group stage and bring one of the favourites Germany to extra time.
The squad received a hero's welcome when they returned home yesterday, despite being knocked out in the round of 16.

However, leading Algerian journalist Maher Mezahi has said the story has no basis.
Hate to burst everyone's bubble, but there's no credible source for #ALG players donating their bonuses to Gaza. Twitter rumour gone mad.

No source for the quote, 'They need it more than us.' Nothing in Algerian press, and the FAF haven't said anything either. — Maher Mezahi (@MezahiMaher) July 3, 2014
Seems like the rumour was started by this guy https://t.co/5l1t7DeMMk. No idea who he is... Rambles incoherently about Slimani and Gaza.

However, one country's players refused their World Cup bonuses this week. The Greek players forwent their bonuses so that the country can develop a training centre for the national side.
We do not want extra bonus , or money. We only play for Greece and its people. All we want is for you to find a land and create a national sports centre that will house or team.
