Middlesbrough are confident they will complete the signing of Victor Valdes, but their hopes of signing former Premier League winner Robin Van Persie seemed to have taken a blow.
Back in the Premier League after a prolonged absence, 'Boro seem intent on remaining there as they look to add proven quality to their squad. Valdes would be a significant coup for the newly-promoted side.
After spending most of his career at Barcelona, Valdes joined Manchester United in October 2014, but only made two appearances at the club. He was exiled out of the club by the then manager, Louis Van Gaal and was subsequently loaned to Standard Liege.
But now a free agent, the 34-year-old looks like he could be back in the Premier League, with a medical booked with the Northern club for Thursday.
Boro were reportedly interested in adding another ex-Manchester United player to their ranks, but talk of that seems to have cooled. Sources close to ESPN reported today that the deal is very much still alive, so it remains to be seen what will happen.
But you have to hand it to Middlesbrough, their transfer policy has been more than ambitious this summer. They've already secured the signatures of highly rated Viktor Fischer and Marten De Roon - the latter costing a reported £12 million.
