Mick McCarthy appeared on the Ray D'Arcy show on RTE Radio 1 this afternoon, and he recalled the rather harsh opinion of him held by Brian Clough.

We discussed what transpired to be a rather odd interview in today's installment of our daily sports podcast The Racket:

Clough was very dismissive of McCarthy ahead of Ireland's clash with England in Euro '88, claiming that his being passed fit was a boost for England. Watch below:

The comments did not go unnoticed by McCarthy, and evidently still play on his mind to this day. During the course of the interview with D'Arcy, McCarthy brought up Clough's comments unprompted, after the presenter had asked whether he re-watched old games on Youtube:

Speaking of Youtube, have a look at Brian Clough's comments about me. It's hilarious now because he actually says 'I hope Mick McCarthy's playing. We should actually be paying their physio to make sure he is fit'. So that was the view of the people of England, and of Brian Clough, God rest his soul.

It's a pretty good quotation 28 years on, bar the omission of deuthsche marks.
